One bitcoin divides into 100 million satoshis ("sats"), the smallest unit of the network. Thinking in sats avoids long strings of zeros after the decimal point for small amounts.
The converter also shows the value in CHF, EUR or USD from a recent rate provided by CoinGecko and cached for a few minutes — the sats ↔ BTC conversion itself is a simple local calculation.
Every 210,000 blocks — about four years — the reward paid to miners for each block is cut in half. It went from 50 BTC originally to 3.125 BTC after the 2024 halving. This decreasing pace caps the total supply at 21 million bitcoins, reached around 2140. The tool's countdown estimates the date of the next halving from the current block height and an average of 10 minutes per block.
Sending a Bitcoin transaction costs fees that do not depend on the amount sent, but on the size of the transaction in bytes and how congested the network is. They are expressed in satoshis per vByte (sat/vB). When the mempool — the queue of pending transactions — fills up, the price to get "into the next block" rises; in quiet periods, a few sat/vB are enough. The recommended values come from mempool.space.
